The Gingerbread Man (Week 2)

Week beginning 23.01.23

Last week:

WOW! What an exciting a jam packed week we have had in Nursery last week!

We have continued our learning on The Gingerbread man and have worked hard to develop our own story telling skills. We have been recalling important events in the story and have re-written the story ourselves. We took the gingerbread man to the zoo , he met lots of different animals that we didn’t see on the farm in the original story.

We became chefs this week too – after exploring the various ingredients and equipment we would need to make our own gingerbread men, we carefully weighed, measured and mixed ingredients to make our own dough. We then used the fine and gross motor skills we have developed so far to roll and cut gingerbread men and baked them in the oven. We had so much fun decorating our gingerbread men with icing and smarties but some of us really wanted to just eat our gingerbread men and our teachers had to stop us!

We have practiced our mark making skills this week by drawing gingerbread men in flour , with chalk and we even listened very carefully to follow verbal instructions to draw a gingerbread man – our mark making skills have really developed as we have practiced so much since we joined Nursery! You can see our masterpieces in the gallery below.

This week:

This week, we will starting to explore a new fairy tale - 'Goldilocks'. Our adults have lots of fun things planned for us including making our own sensory porridge play dough , using scales, spoons and cups to measure out quantities and develop our mathematical language to be able to discuss and compare weights and quantities, STEM activities to build a new chair and bed for baby after Goldilocks broke when she visited their house and so much more!

As this is our first week exploring this new fairy tale, we will be looking very closely at the story plots, key events and characters - our adults will be encouraging us to use sentences to express our ideas and opinions and we will practice retelling the story in the correct sequence and will add some actions and voice sounds to make our story really interesting!

You can share our new story with your children at home by watching the read along video here: https://youtu.be/kvfOwN6kEUU

You can help your child with their comprehension by asking questions about the story , this helps you to check their understanding of what is happening. You might ask questions such as: Who are the characters in the story? What did goldilocks do? How might baby bear feel? How might Goldilocks feel? What do you think happened next?

We are very excited to be reading a new book this week and look forward to lots of fun and new learning in Nursery!
