The Gingerbread Man

Week beginning 16.1.23

WELCOME BACK!

We are so pleased to be back in Nursery and continuing our learning during Term 2 of the academic year!

The children have all come back to Nursery with positive attitudes and many have matured over the Christmas break which has been wonderful to see; everyone settled back into our routines and were very excited to see their friends after our break. We were very excited last week to welcome four new members to our class , our Nursery children have demonstrated all of their Personal, Social and Emotional skills they have worked on throughout Term 1 and made our new children feel very welcome it was lovely to see the children begin to interact with each other and form some more new friendships. Well done Nursery, you are all amazing friends!

We began our work on our new book last week, ‘The Gingerbread man’ and we have thoroughly enjoyed this book so far! We have read the book together and recalled much of the plot , we have thought about characters, the setting and the actions of the different characters in the story. This story has lent itself well to Phase 1 Phonics where we explored different animal sounds, put actions to our story as we read it to make it fun and interesting and we have also thought about other animals that may have lived on the farm in our story. We have really enjoyed thinking of different animal sounds and using our voices to portray this , along with thinking about different actions we may put to the story to show what is happening. We also worked together to measure out the ingredients to make ginger scented play dough that we then used to roll out and make gingerbread men we had to follow instructions carefully and measure the ingredients so that the play dough was just right. Our teachers were very impressed with our listening skills and the wonderful language and vocabulary we were using and understanding.

Here are some of our pictures from last week, we had lots of fun!

This week, we will be continuing our learning on ‘The Gingerbread man story’ ; Now that we are familiar with the storyline and characters, we will be exploring different areas of the curriculum including baking and decorating gingerbread men together we will be focussing on following verbal instructions, measuring out ingredients and will also discuss health and safety aspects of baking. We will also be rewriting the story of The Gingerbread Man by creating a new setting for the story and meeting new characters that we will decide together as a class to make a new book for our class library. There will also be some wonderful Understanding The World opportunities such as exploring what might happen to The Gingerbread man if he had gotten wet in the river this is a wonderful chance for the children to explore cause and effect and build upon their already developing language.

You can watch a version of The Gingerbread Man story with your child at home using the following link:

Encourage your child to join in with key phrases from the story , and ask them simple questions about the story as you listen. For example, what animal can you see, what noise do they make? How do you think the Gingerbread Man was feeling? Etc.

We are really looking forward to the week ahead and can’t wait to tell you all about the things we got up to next week!
