Sunflower Challenge (EY Maths)

Week beginning 2nd May

Last week:

The children had a fab week in Nursery last week as we began our Sunflower challenge! We already knew that our children were interested in planting and growing after growing beans last term, but it was wonderful to see all of the knowledge they had remembered and applied to growing sunflowers too!

We have spent lots of time this week incorporating maths skills into our challenge, we have used five frames to count how many children we have in class, whether we have enough seeds and pots and it is so fantastic to see the children use mathematical language that we have learnt throughout the year to explain what they have found. The children enjoyed choosing some sunflower seeds ( we have a few varieties so are very excited to see what our sunflowers look like when they grow!) , planting them and placing them in the sunshine to grow.

To link to our challenge, we have also been reading ‘The Little Sunflower’ – the children have demonstrated their Literacy skills by identifying the title on the front cover and also predicting what the story might be about by looking at the front cover. As we have read through the book, the children used their language skills to discuss with each other what is happening.

We have also become keen artists this week, creating paintings based on the works of Vincent Van Gogh and drawing still life pictures of sunflowers – we have built up so much confidence in our art skills especially after our art week previously, and our teachers are very proud of our fine motor skills, determination and persistence when creating our unique pieces of art.

Take a look at our pictures below, we just love how much happiness the sunflowers and our artwork are bringing to our classroom!

This week:

This week, although a shorter week due to the Bank Holiday , we have lots to do! We will be exploring the special Christian story , Noah’s Ark for our RE week – this will link wonderfully to our Rumble in the Jungle topic as we explore the animals that went onto Noah’s Ark. We will be learning the story and the key message it holds, we would love for you to encourage your children to talk about the story at home , if you’d like to listen to the story with your child you can click the following link to redirect to a YouTube video.

In addition, we will be celebrating the Kings Coronation on Friday! We are very excited to invite our parents in for a picnic (let’s hope the weather is nice!) and will be making some art out of recycled materials to share with our parents! We hope you can make it.

We look forward to lots of fun in Nursery this week and look forward to seeing all of our children and Parents (on Friday!)
