Owl Babies

Week beginning 21st November

Nursery have had so much fun exploring our story of the week ‘Owl Babies’, by Martin Waddell. We have listened to the story closely and have tried hard to use longer sentences to talk about the story and answer questions that Mrs Taylor and Miss Malpass have asked us.

We have learnt lots of important facts about owls including their habitat and the food they eat, and we used our facts to make a fact file for our class library! We were especially interested in the body parts of an owl such as their wings and beak and enjoyed learning about why they have these features, some of us also even began to compare to humans! We know it would be silly for us to have hands and fingers like us , we use a knife and fork to cut our food but an owl uses its sharp talons and beak to rip into the food they have caught!

We have all been interested in our ‘Owl babies’ tuff tray and have been using the resources to begin to retell parts of the story, because we have natural materials such as acorns, twigs, leaves and straw to use we have been able to explore our senses too!

Out story has helped us to think about animals and nature, we know that we need to care for our environment , but also about our feelings and how we could respond if we thought we were lost like the baby owls in our story did.

We have practiced our fine motor skills by using tweezers  to feed ‘worms’ to our baby owls and in the water area we used pipettes to give water to our baby owls so they didn’t get thirsty – we are getting really good at focusing on activities to reach an end goal and it has helped us to think about how to care for animals.

We have also been completely fascinated by creating shadows using our torches this week! We have been exploring how light can make shadows and had lots of fun experimenting with different hand shapes to create ‘animal shadows’. As we have enjoyed this so much, Mrs Taylor and Miss Malpass are going to plan lots more provision into this next week so that we can continue to explore and investigate.
