Jack and The Beanstalk

Week beginning 13th February

Last week:

Last week, we introduced our new story – Jack and the beanstalk. The children have enjoyed learning the new story and have practiced their retelling skills , they have remembered so much of the key information from the text and their oral sentences are super!

The children have explored the concept of height and length in Mathematics this week; the children spent time during continuous provision drawing around and cutting out their own footprints and compared them to the giants footprint from our story. They also investigated height and were able to order their heights through discussion, some children even went on to build towers that were taller and shorter than them, the wonderful vocabulary we heard during this activity demonstrated their amazing developing mathematical knowledge!

We have continued with the mathematical concept of ‘noticing’ and ‘subitising’ , now that the childrens’ vocabulary has developed they have been able to explain in more detail what they notice about their environment, they have also been able to group up to three items without counting them which is a great start to further maths skills and problem solving.

We have also enjoyed spending time outdoors this week playing in the mud kitchen, the children have made breakfast for Jack from our story and developed their role play around this. Some children have also enjoyed using large chalks on the brick walls to mark make and create giant bean stalks, again reciting parts of the story as they do this. We are super proud!

Take a look at some of the wonderful pictures demonstrating what our children have been getting up to this week!

This week:

This week, we will be continuing with our story Jack and the Beanstalk. Now that we know the story well, we will begin some activities to deepen our knowledge of the world. We will be investigating what a bean plant (beanstalk) would need to grow and will go on to plant our own beans – we will be setting up an observation station so that the children can observe the changes as the plants begin to grow, we will also be working on our team work skills by making a rota for the children to take it in turns to water the plants.

There will be lots of opportunities for the children to continue to explore our story and build upon their key skills during continuous provision, including drawing and cutting leaves to build their own bean stalks, using tweezers to pick up and sort a variety of different beans, making their own green playdough to roll , pinch and mould into beanstalks and much more! Remember, our children learn best when they are exploring, investigating and ‘playing’!

If you would like to support your children at home, you could ask them to recall the story to you – encourage them to use full sentences and discuss their favourite parts of the story. You could also encourage your child to help you look after any plants you may have at home by watering them or plant some seeds together and notice the changes. We are sure you will have lots of fun together!

We are really looking forward to another busy week in nursery, we are so proud of the children and how they are progressing, it is a pleasure to be a part of!
