Week beginning 8th February

Last week:

Nursery children were so busy last week! Between our usual focus sessions of maths, literacy and fine/gross motor skills – we also took a trip to the Library in Halesowen town centre which we all thoroughly enjoyed and became chefs for the morning when we made our own porridge that we made ‘Just right!’.

Our adults have been so proud of us as our listening and communication and language skills have developed, we are able to have wonderful discussions, recall stories and big events we have had in Nursery – we have enjoyed making our floor books in Nursery with Miss Malpass, documenting our trip to the library and porridge making. Our adults have also noticed how we are working so much better together and as our sense of community has developed, we have been working together more and demonstrating fabulous team work skills!

We’ve had a fantastic time over the last two weeks working on our story ‘Goldilocks and the three bears’, we’ve enjoyed the sensory  exploration of working with oats, building models of things from our story for a huge floor map to help us retell the story , making porridge, visiting the library, following instructions to draw characters from our story and so much more!

We have some more amazing pictures of our activities from last week below!

This week:

We are moving on to our final Traditional Tale, Jack and The Beanstalk,  for our topic this half term  ‘Once upon a story’, we will spend another two weeks exploring this story. This week we explore the story and it’s events deeply, we will focus on learning the plot of the story , exploring the characters and their actions and how they might be feeling, and working on recalling our knowledge to recall the story in our own words. Following on from our learning last week with language focusing on weight and capacity in Maths, we will begin to explore vocabulary of height – we will be doing this by ordering height, measuring our own height before moving on to one of our exciting experiences next week!

If you would like to listen to the story with your child at home, there is a wonderful video that can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfQKSC-iiYM where the story is retold by Mr Tumble. To help your child develop their listening skills, encourage them to listen very carefully to the story and see if they can tell you what happened once they have finished listening. Another fun activity you could try at home with your child to develop their phonics skills is to think about adding sound effects to the story using their voices and bodies, for example, stomping their feet when the giant walks, making a ‘crash’ sound with their voice as the beanstalk falls down etc.

We can’t wait to have lots more fun in Nursery this week! Look out for our next newsletter to see what we have gotten up to!
