Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Week beginning 30.01.23

Last week:

Mrs Taylor and Miss Malpass have had a thoroughly wonderful week with the children in Nursery.

We began our learning based around the story ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. We worked really hard to hone our fine motor skills by transferring porridge oats using different sized spoons to a big bowl, a medium bowl and small bowl for the three bears , we have made sensory porridge playdough and practiced our mathematical vocabulary making portions for each of the different sized bears, explored capacity in the water area and started using words such as ‘full’ and ‘empty, along with learning lots of new phonics skills this week. As our listening skills have improved so much since we started in Nursery, we have moved on to identifying initial sounds in words – we had so much fun exploring different objects , identifying their initial sounds and sorting them into a basket for Goldilocks and a basket for the bears; we also learnt a new song with actions about Goldilocks visiting the house of the bears. Why don’t you ask your child if they can perform the song with the actions for you , the song can be found here to support them:

This week:

We have a very busy week! We are going to use all of our knowledge from last week’s learning to make our own porridge – we will weigh and measure the ingredients and cook to see if it is ‘Just Right!’. We will be continuing with our mathematical vocabulary development and will be comparing sizes and weights , this will be introduced through our continuous provision time.

We are also really excited to be visiting the library for the first time. This will be our first trip out of school with our adults and we are really looking forward to seeing more of our local community on  our walk to the library.

As always we will have lots of fun activities for the children to access during continuous provision time, this week they will be able to build models to add to a giant story map to help them retell the story, they can write their own porridge recipes and role play making it in the home area, they will be practicing phonics skills and getting creative painting characters from the story.

You can help your child by talking about the story and their learning by asking questions to see what they can remember. For example, what ingredients do you need to make porridge? Who are the characters in the story? Can you find an object beginning with the sound b-b-b or g-g-g? etc.

There is also a lovely video you could watch with your child about making porridge – this might help your child to recall how they made their own porridge in school and will open up a lovely opportunity for discussion. The video can be found here:

We are looking forward to another busy but fun week in Nursery, we can’t wait!
