Art Week

Week beginning 24th April

Last week:

What a wonderful week we have had in Nursery! It was so lovely to see our friends and all of the smiling faces. The children were absolutely incredible at settling back in and have shown their adults that they remember all of our routines and behaviour expectations. This week we have also welcomed another two children to our Nursery class, they have also settled very well, began to make new friends and our existing children were so kind and friendly , such brilliant friends!

This week we were really excited to take part in Art Week 2023 – as a class we looked at three different artists – Andy Goldsworthy , Wassily Kandinsky and Georges Seurat. All are very different artists with different mediums, it gave the children an opportunity to realise that art isn’t just painting but can also be sculptures , photographs and even art created with shapes and lines rather than a picture. We encouraged the children to think about which art they like best and why, some also thought about which they didn’t like and why.

The children completed some art projects such as pointillism finger painting and pointillism play dough creations, they explored shape and colour mixing to recreate Kandinsky’s squares and circles art work and explored our outdoor environment for natural resources to make a class piece of art in the style of Andy Goldsworthy.

In addition to all the art taking place in our classroom this week, we let the children decide before the Easter break what they would like in our small world area – it may not come as a surprise to you that the children chose a dinosaur theme! The children have been so intrigued by the dinosaur bones and became archaeologists using equipment to reveal the bones underneath the sand , some children went on to create diagrams of the bones and research using our books and iPads to find out what dinosaurs these bones were from. This has really sparked the interest of the children, we have heard some wonderful language through discussion with their peers and adults and I am sure we have at least one budding archaeologist in our class – watch this space!

Here are some of the pictures from our week in Nursery , as you can see the children have practiced and built upon many of their fine motor, gross motor and communication skills and as previously mentioned their friendship skills too!

This week:

This week , we will be starting our sunflower challenge in Nursery. We will be launching this on Monday and doing lots of research in preparation covering maths, Understanding the world, Communication and language skills to name a few. In addition to this , we will be continuing our art theme running too , we will be looking at the artist Vincent Van Gogh and his famous work ‘Sunflowers’.

If you’d like to engage at home with your children about this we encourage you to visit your local library to find some books about sunflowers, mini beasts and Vincent Van Gogh or even do some research online! We also suggest accessing this lovely book on Youtube which is the book we will be reading in class.
